When Death Came
1 min readJul 14, 2020
I was wide awake
I’ve been ready
for this end
from far too long
yet
now —
death meets me
and I fight
hard
holding on to so many
attachments
of you
and this hard-won house,
with much money spent in
sweat and discontentment,
amidst
these things I drown in
tons & tons of this and that — fill in,
all blank,
till mortality will do us apart
even as
the breeze blows so fresh
while the sun shines so bright
shattering this day
when birds sound sweet song
just feel
this tall taste of here
in which
I see
now —
wide awake
to such sour fate
where death no longer
cares to wait
and
I’m not ready.
