…i know it’s 5 am….
show finished hours ago!!
PEOPLE IN CASTS ARE EVERYWHERE!
Where is he?

To have or… have not?
That’s a very good question
Baby, you’ve got a kid?
Sure!

Like ‘em?
Uh, no!
…AND ALL THE FUN SEEMS TO BE GOING
ON AT THE OTHER END OF THE TABLE
Could you pay it?
MORON!
Give me my purse!

WHEN YOU HAVE A MAN
YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SAY TO HIM
RUN, DON’T WALK,
AWAY FROM THESE MEN

WHEN WOMEN FALL IN
LOVE, THEY LEAVE
Get it?

Now I understand…
THE SPINSTER AUNT
YOU GET AILMENTS THAT
YOU DIDN’T EVEN KNOW EXISTED
still have four gray hairs
clinging on…
EATING EVERYTHING JUST TO LOSE
SOME WEIGHT
SUPERMARKET PERILS
Mine’s an instant spray!

…do i have a godmother…?
…my yoga instructor…
She’s so smart
so funny and so slim….!

So, who wants to be normal?!

This piece (including the title) is composed out of randomly selected phrases and capitalization taken out of Maitena Burundarena’s (1998) “Women on the Edge 4”, which was translated into English by Margarita Raimundez (2005). I simply love this Argentine cartoonist’s “Mujeres Alteradas”; i.e., her “Women on the Edge” series — in both language versions.

Maitena’s work is such brilliant and irreverent commentary on everyday gender battles, as experienced by middle-class Argentinian women — with their obsessions. Her comic art also speaks to another favorite of mine, the acerbic wit of veteran French cartoonist Claire Bretécher — with her equally feminist portrayals of women’s lives and their triple burden concerns. (More on Bretécher in a future #ReadIt post.)
